Question 2 - If elected, what strategies would you pursue to ensure housing is affordable for people of all incomes?

Transcript: In order for us to have more affordable housing built, we need to begin with a fair and transparent discussion with those who we hope will build it. We need to ask them what it would take for us to achieve our goals. It has always been my understanding that the cost of land is at least a third of the cost of a home. We need to ask questions like: if we allow more mixed-use in some zoning areas in the county, does that help lower the cost of the land for residential? If we allow slightly taller residential buildings, how much does that lower the cost per unit? After these frank and open discussions, I would support once again examining the existing policies to see what we can change to have more affordable housing, and look at ways to see how we can help finance some projects that need assistance to help bring them to fruition.

Spanish Transcript: Para que podamos tener más viviendas asequibles construidas, debemos comenzar con una discusión justa y transparente con aquellos que esperamos que las construyan. Tenemos que preguntarles qué haría falta para lograr nuestros objetivos. Siempre he entendido que el costo del terreno es al menos un tercio del costo de una casa. Necesitamos hacer preguntas como: si permitimos más uso mixto en algunas áreas de zonificación en el condado, ¿eso ayuda a reducir el costo del terreno para uso residencial?
