Omar Lazo - Question 4

Question 4: What does Montgomery County need to do to achieve Vision Zero, eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries?

Transcript: So what does Montgomery County need to do to achieve Vision Zero? I am in Wheaton, this is where I've done most of my work, this is where my small business is at, and this is really where I call home. For years, we have been battling to make Wheaton more walkable. We've lost many friends and family personally. You know, with my business, there's definitely at least two customers that I've lost that I don't see anymore, their family still comes in. So for me, it's very personal. I think, you know, it's an approach where we definitely have to put more money into the infrastructure. But one of the most important things is developing that relationship with the Maryland State Highway Administration, because the main roads, especially through most of my district, you know, we have Veirs Mill, we have Wheaton and I mean, Georgia Avenue, and we have University Boulevard. These are state roads that go through our city here. And we have to work harder, and, you know, we definitely have made advances with them, but work harder for them to bring about the changes that we need. Reducing speed limits, putting HAWK signals, you know, adding more lighting, you know, most of the deaths that occur at nighttime. You know, we've known the statistics show it and you can just see it on the news. It's always, almost always, at night. So we need to make sure that the lighting is improved. So I want to make sure that we work together closely between, you know, Montgomery County Department of Transportation, Maryland State Highways Administration, and all of our delegation, you know, working with our state delegates in order to make sure that we bring the changes that we need and we deserve here for the safety of our residents
