Marilyn Balcombe - Question 3
Question 3 - Over 40% of Montgomery County’s greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation. What policies and investments would you support to address this?
Transcript: Montgomery County has made significant improvement in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the last decade. However, we know that there’s so much more work that needs to be done. We do need to decrease our reliance on single-occupancy vehicles, and I think that we need to look for increased transit; I have been a strong supporter of the Corridor Cities Transitway and bus rapid transit in the Upcounty, and we need to make sure that that continues to happen. And we need to be smart about the way that we implement transportation and transit. One size does not fit all, of course we have geographic differences between the down county and the Upcounty. And we also need to look at microtransit, so one of the issues that we have in the Upcounty is that not everybody lives in walking distance to transit, and so we need to make sure that we have ways to get people from their homes to transit more reliably and effectively. I am a strong, strong, strong supporter of MARC rail; we need to make sure that we have increased rail, all day rail on MARC system, so I think that expansion of MARC is a high priority for me. Thank you.
