Question 2 - If elected, what strategies would you pursue to ensure housing is affordable for people of all incomes?

Transcript: “All right, let’s talk about housing affordability. Montgomery County has a housing shortage and that is creating affordability challenges at every level, and it is closing the doors to our future. Young people can’t get a foothold here, seniors don’t have anywhere to downsize to, it’s a huge problem, so we have to tackle that crisis. Two ideas I want to share. First,, the social housing fund. I created a $50 million fund, and I want to boost that to $100 million, working with my colleagues at the council to fund projects like the one that’s over my shoulder here, built by the Housing Opportunities Commission in a public-private partnership, bringing hundreds of units of housing to Downtown Silver Spring in a transit-oriented location, but also with deep affordability for very low-income residents. Second, we are in the Purple Line corridor, and as county executive I am going to create a $100 million Purple Line construction and housing fund, and we’re going to use that to buy market-affordable buildings and then put them under nonprofit ownership and over time redevelop them to add two or three times as many units, but all under long term price control. And so, through that strategy we can add thousands of units to the Purple Line corridor and ensure that that area is always accessible and affordable to the workforce and a great place to live when we rebuild the streetscapes and all of the bike and pedestrian infrastructure. So all those things work together, and that’s my vision to make the county more affordable.”
