Question 1 - The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments projects that Montgomery County’s population will increase by 200,000 over the next 30 years. How should the county prepare for future growth?

Transcript: “Hi, well the first question is, where can this county fit future residents who are moving here? And we have to embrace the reality that we are a community with a housing shortage, so let’s start with that: we need a county executive who will lead our community to tackle the housing shortage. It’s local and it’s regional, and it’s making this county unaffordable. Now, where can we fit our future residents? Here, in places like Downtown Silver Spring, up and down Rockville Pike, in the urban centers of the county, that’s where most new growth will need to be located. And if we can do it here and do it well, then we come out with places that you want to spend your time in, where you want to live, where young workers can get a foothold in the county, where empty nesters can find a great place to retire, you’ve got great restaurants, you’ve got things to do, great retail, community – it’s popping, it’s fun, it’s exciting, and then the county can balance it’s rural, it’s suburban, and it’s urban. That’s what I stand for – I am the undisputed champion on our county council for smart growth and this vision of our future, and I need your support.”

Spanish: “Hola, bueno, la primera pregunta es, ¿dónde puede acomodar este condado a los futuros residentes que se mudan aquí? Tenemos que aceptar la realidad de que somos una comunidad con escasez de viviendas, así que comencemos con eso: necesitamos un ejecutivo del condado que dirija a nuestra comunidad a abordar la escasez de viviendas.
