Question 4 - What does Montgomery County need to do to achieve Vision Zero, eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries?

Transcript: This is a heartbreaking issue and too many families have been devastated by it. We have to make sure this is among our highest priorities. It starts with ensuring that, in our master planning process, we ensure maximum walkability. We also have to look at the reduction of speed limits in and around particularly urban areas where we’ve seen such high incidences of vehicular crashes with pedestrians. We have to implement the HAWK signal system and we also have to add more sidewalks in suburban areas as well. We know that, with Google Maps and Waze, people are traveling in and around and within neighborhoods at much higher rates than they were prior to the pandemic. And we also have to work with the state highway administration to enact and take better advantage of technology such as red light cameras and speed cameras on especially busy thruways such as Connecticut Avenue and Knowles Road. We also want to make sure that we partner with our community to educate everyone about the importance of walking at crosswalks, but it’s the county’s responsibility to make sure that we lay the infrastructure to save lives.
