Question 3 - Over 40% of Montgomery County’s greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation. What policies and investments would you support to address this?

Transcript: So I supported and led, along with Councilmember Hucker, an effort to conduct an assessment – a climate assessment – of all bills coming forward from the county moving forward, including master plans and we need to make sure that this is a priority. And we also have to make sure people can get out of their cars in the first place by supporting technology that closes the digital divide, that will make a big difference, and providing incentives to companies to allow their employees to continue to be able to work from home. We also need to take advantage of existing projects that have been in the queue for too long, such as the BRT Flash system, and we need to initiate comprehensive policies such as the bike master plan and the project moved forward by the Washington Area Bike Association (WABA) which will aggressively allow us to provide more options for people to be able to get out of their vehicles. And then, finally, we need to invest more in our bus system and make sure that the lines are not just aligned with getting to and from work, but getting to and from everyday activities that people need to be able to get to, such as sports practices or just going to the grocery store or a doctor’s appointment. All those things collectively I think will make a difference.

Spanish: Yo apoyé y lideré, junto con el concejal Hucker, un esfuerzo para realizar una evaluación, una evaluación climática, de todos los proyectos de ley que se presenten en el condado, incluidos los planes maestros, y debemos asegurarnos de que esto sea una prioridad. Y también tenemos que asegurarnos de que las personas puedan salir de sus automóviles en primer lugar apoyando la tecnología que cierra la brecha digital, que marcará una gran diferencia, y brindando incentivos a las empresas para que permitan que sus empleados continúen trabajando desde casa. También debemos aprovechar los proyectos existentes que han estado en espera durante demasiado tiempo, como el sistema Flash de autobuses de tránsito rápido (BRT, por sus siglas en inglés), y debemos iniciar políticas integrales como el plan maestro de bicicletas y el proyecto impulsado por la Asociación de Bicicletas del Área de Washington (WABA, por sus siglas en inglés) que nos permitirá agresivamente brindar más opciones para que las personas puedan salir de sus vehículos. Y luego, finalmente, necesitamos invertir más en nuestro sistema de autobuses y asegurarnos de que las líneas no solo estén alineadas para ir y venir del trabajo, sino también para ir y venir de las actividades cotidianas a las que las personas necesitan poder llegar, como prácticas deportivas o simplemente ir al supermercado o a una cita médica. Todas esas cosas colectivamente creo que marcarán la diferencia.
