Question 1 - The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments projects that Montgomery County’s population will increase by 200,000 over the next 30 years. How should the county prepare for future growth?

Transcript: Hello, my name is Paul Schwartz and I am a candidate for the Montgomery County Council seat for the newly created District Seven. The first of four video questions posed by Montgomery for All deals with the projected population growth of Montgomery County of some 200,000 in the next thirty years and how we should prepare for it. Let me begin my answer by stating unequivocally that I am not in favor of rezoning without overwhelming community support. Rezoning is tantamount to reneging on previously made commitments and I do not support reneging on previously made commitments. That said, with population growth comes the need for additional housing, and I do support placing new construction near transportation hubs, which brings with it the added advantage of reducing dependence on cars and of vehicular traffic congestion that they create. I am also in favor of some form of subsidies for teachers, police, and firefighters, and others to make it more affordable for those who serve our communities to live in the communities in which they serve. También estoy a favor de algún tipo de subsidio para maestros, policías y bomberos, y otros para que sea más asequible para que quienes sirven a nuestras comunidades vivan en las comunidades en las que sirven.
